Pace / Trace / Place
A collaborative artwork made by Australian Walking Artists during a monthly online meeting.
At 4.30pm on Sunday 22 February 17 AWA members from around Australia met online to follow a prompt (left) devised by walking artist, Melinda Hunt. The artists’s intention was to transform a meeting into a collaborative artwork consisting of a collection of walks undertaken by members during the meeting and set of drawings made in response to those walks. The proceedings were recorded and are available below.
Pace / Trace / Place provided members with an opportunity to see where other members live and walk. As can be seen in the recording, several members were walking in the sunshine along bush tracks near the coast in Queensland. Others were walking through damp streets in inner city Sydney. A small group walked through a regional museum in Ballarat while a number of members walked through their homes and out into gardens where pets were encountered. The recording captures a large collaborative event in all of its glory including moments of humour, confusion and the shared pleasure in creating together.
While half the members in the meeting were walking the other half were responding to the walks unfolding on their screens by making drawings. The prompt suggested that participants in Pace / Trace / Place could make a map, write the names of things they could see or track the movement of the landscape. The drawings below include the names of the artists who created them.
